Barcelona-based Bex – fronted by Cork singer Rebecca Houlihan – discuss their unique sound and upcoming single, ‘Freedom’.
How did the band come about?
Rebecca: There are big jam nights here in Barcelona, where you can perform with loads of different musicians. It’s a good place to meet people. Me and Bryan are from Cork, Hernan is from Argentina, and Lorenzo is from Italy. We started off doing cover music, and then we started doing originals. We all have the same interests, and the same style of music, so we perform really well together.
Who and what are your musical influences?
R: My influences as a singer are Amy Winehouse and Adele. As for the band, we like to groove together – so definitely ’90s Red Hot Chili Peppers! Our songs are not like what’s out there right now. That’s what’s missing from music at the moment: songs with stories, or songs that connect with people.
Lorenzo: We also have this jazz, soul, funk-rock sound in everything. When you listen to our music, you can feel those sounds like different languages.

How does your new single, ‘Freedom’, stand out from your other work?
R: It’s our most emotional song when we perform it live. The lyrics are really strong and powerful. It’s taking the person on a journey. Every time we play the song, we’re on a natural high afterwards, because you can see that it affects people in a beautiful way – and there’s an amazing guitar solo at the end. It’s also the first song that we wrote together.
As Irish people living abroad, what are your thoughts on the Irish music scene at the moment?
Rebecca: I’ve been trying to keep up with the Irish scene – obviously Hozier comes to mind, but there’s also a lot of up-and-coming artists from Cork at the moment, especially Bambie Thug. I love everything that they do, especially their Eurovision song. What an amazing performer! I’ve been listening to Chubby Cat as well, another fellow Cork musician.
