This year’s list has been selected by a panel of 136 industry experts and artists which include Elton John, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, and Celeste.
Jessica Smyth, also known by her stage name, Biig Piig, has earned a place on the 2023 BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of 2023.
The 24-year old, originally from Cork, but now based in West London, burst onto the music scene in 2017 with her single, ‘Vice City.’ The song has now been viewed over nine million times on YouTube. Her first release of a set of trilogy projects, the five-track EP, Big Fan of the Sesh, Vol.1, came out in 2018. Its sequel, A World Without a Snooze, Vol.2, was released in 2019. In June of that year, the young musician signed to RCA Records ahead of the announcement of her European and Dublin headline tour.
Having released a number of new tracks this year including ‘Fun’, ‘Kerosene’, and featuring on ‘Rainbow Tables’, there seems to be no stopping the Irish producer, rapper and singer-songwriter. Her debut mixtape, Bubblegum, is set to drop on 20th January 2023, following 2021's The Sky Is Bleeding EP. The singer-rapper is also going on tour in 2023, performing everywhere from Dublin, Cork and the UK, to New York, Los Angeles and Amsterdam. Remaining tickets on sale can be found here.
Speaking of this year’s longlist, Head of Music for Radio 1’s Chris Price has said, “This year’s Sound Of longlist is one of the strongest and most diverse we’ve ever published. The most striking thing about it is the breadth of genres represented. Every single artist on the list has been incubated on Radio 1’s playlist and specialist output; whoever wins, we can be sure that 2023 will be a vintage year for new Pop, Dance, R&B, Soul, Drum & Bass, Afrobeats and Indie.”
