Blossoms have shared a behind-the-scenes look at their co-writing process with Irish musician CMAT on TikTok.

The indie-rock band released the track ‘I Like Your Look’ in September of last year off their 2024 album Gary. The song was born during their writing session at an Airbnb in Wales.

In December of 2022, Tom Ogden, lead singer of Blossoms, discovered CMAT’s music in a record shop in Brighton. Also known as Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, he decided to see her live that night, and the two grabbed drinks after the show. They remained in contact, and talked of making music together.

By 2023, Blossoms planned to book an Airbnb in Wales to focus on their writing.

“We’d never done anything like this before. Normally I’d write the songs at home and bring them to the lads,” said Ogden. “We wanted to try something new and have some time just us five together.”

Thompson, at her suggestion, was invited to come along. When the writing process came to a lull, she recommended everyone have a drink, handed each person a book and offered a unique strategy.

“The idea was to start shouting out phrases, lines from the books, which could become potential song titles,” said Ogden. “Some were shit.”

Drummer Joe Donovan read aloud the sentence, “I like your look,” and it instantly stuck. After brainstorming, the group knew they wanted to write a song about fashion.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever done it before, but I was like, damn it’d be really good if they did something that somehow incorporated that really, really, early, primitive version of rapping,” said Thomas. “You know, like what Blondie would’ve done on ‘Rapture.’ I think it would be really good craic to make a fashion song actually describing what you fuckers actually wear.”

By the second day working on the song, they finished writing and produced a demo. The track was then recorded in Liverpool with James Skelly and Chris Taylor, incorporating audio from their demo in Wales.

“It felt different to anything we’ve made before,” said Ogden.
