Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, the men behind Blue Note records, the iconic home to John Coltrane, Anita Baker, Thelonious Monk and more, chose to name their label after the musician’s term for that low-pitched note at the crest of a song, often associated with singin’ the blues. Groove-making, Dublin-based mystery outfit Faws (not even the keen-eyed research monkeys at HP know who he, she or they are) drop plenty such notes on their second EP, along with a whole lot of fizz-coated samples, some head-scratching, some not-so-headscratching (the title of third track ‘Whitney’ kind of gives the game away). A heady mix of clanging, clattering numbers like ‘For Those Who Try’ and softer moments, like the billowing, graceful climax of ‘To Look Inside’, add to the quiet storm effect and make the Blue Notes EP a slow, unravelling pleasure.
