The band, from Crouch End, London, met when Steadman, Jamie MacColl and Suren de Saram met aged 15 at University College School, Hampstead and began playing under the name The Canals. They recruited Ed Nash after meeting him at a funeral in 2006.
The indie-rock group was entered into Virgin Mobile's Road to V competition on Channel 4 in 2006. Subsequently winning the competition, they were given the opening slot of the 2006 V Festival, playing on the Channel 4 Stage before opening the Staffordshire site the following day.
