First collaborating for a track on 2009 charity record Dark Was the Night, Aaron Dessner (The National) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) have announced they will release a full album under new moniker Big Red Machine.

The self-titled 10 track album will be released August 31 via the new PEOPLE digital platform and all streaming services, as well as vinyl, cassette and CD, in partnership with record label Jagjaguwar.

According to a statement from the band, Dessner and Vernon developed material for Big Red Machine over the past two years by playing improvised live sets at various festivals, performing the song sketches with different collaborators each time.

"“I don’t think the record would exist without the community that came together to make it. We took the music to a certain point, and then we reached out and sent it far and wide, inviting friends to contribute any and all ideas," says Dessner.

Continuing he adds: "We’ve viewed the record and the process from a community standpoint. We’re incredibly excited about it, as excited as we would be for any album we might make in another situation that’s more conventional. But this feels like something new—the process and outcome felt different."

Available to stream now are four tracks from the upcoming album: 'Gratitude', 'Hymnostic', Forrest Green' and 'Lyla.'

While there definitely seems more of a Bon Iver influence on the first three songs, the more experimental 'Lyla' has us excited about the two indie darlings collaborating for a full LP.
