Boygenius show their friendship in a new, fun-filled light in the self taped music video for 'Not Strong Enough'.
Indie trio boygenius–made up of members Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus–released a new single today as tickets for their tour went on sale.
'Not Strong Enough' is the fourth song to be issued off of their debut album The Record, which is due for release March 31st. Through soaring harmonies and the band’s signature candid lyricism, the song is about paradoxically experiencing self-hatred while having a God complex.
The Record's three preceding tracks '$20,' 'Emily I'm Sorry' and 'True Blue' received positive reactions after their drop in late January.
'Not Strong Enough' is the most collaborative of the four released tracks, with the singers trading versus and coming back together for the chorus. Lyrically, the song describes feelings of low self-esteem in a relationship: "The way I am / Not strong enough to be your man / I lied, I am / Just lowering your expectations."
The accompanying music video, shot by the band and edited by Phoebe Bridger's brother Jackson, depicts the three hanging out - playing mini golf and visiting the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.
The Record is about recapturing joy and making time. It is about an inadvertent detour that adds an hour to a trip and whether that time is valuable or not. Or–if valuable and not valuable are even viable measures of such a thing.

The performers began working on The Record in June of 2020, just a week after Bridgers' second solo album, Punisher, came out.
Bridgers sent Baker and Dacus a demo of 'Emily I'm Sorry' and asked if they could be a band again. Nobody had wanted to be the first to ask since their self-titled 2018 EP had demanded so much of them. But in quick time, Baker created a Google Drive folder called "dare I say it" and the three began flooding it with ideas for new songs.
The songs written before the vaccine rollout were written individually, the songs produced after are conversations. Sometimes, each person takes a verse, and creates their own version. Sometimes, they sing together, wistfully harmonising in synchronise.
The band also just announced three new UK tour dates at Gunnersbury Park, London, Piece Hall in Halifax and an appearance at Connect Festival in Edinburgh in August. No Irish dates have been shared at this moment, unfortunately.
