On Saturday evening, Brandi Carlile surprised her Hollywood Bowl audience with an array of unexpected musical guests for her Brandi Carlile & Friends extravaganza.
Closing out her 2023 tour on a high, Brandi Carlile was joined onstage this weekend by surprise musical guests Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Lucius, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Wendy & Lisa and her wife, Catherine Carlile.
The 21-song setlist covered a variety of songs, from Brandi’s own to those of her onstage friends. As the guests performed, Carlile’s onstage crew grew in size until the finale, which saw Joni Mitchell joined onstage by Carlile and all of her musical friends. The surprise performance follows the pair’s reunion this year with a second edition of their collaborative concert Joni Jam in George, Washington.
The entire entourage, fronted by Mitchell, performed the Canadian singer-songwriter’s own ‘Shine,’ ‘Ladies Of The Canyon’ and ‘The Circle Game.’
Carlile and Mitchell joked with each other before commencing their performance; As she poured some wine for her musical friends, Carlile jokingly recalled the time Mitchell called her “butch” for drinking straight out of the bottle.
The pair also fondly remembered a recent boating trip they took in Mitchell’s native Canada, and Carlile revealed that the 79-year-old throws the best parties in Los Angeles. “I like to party!” Mitchell simply responded.

After performing a few of her own songs, including ‘Broken Horses’ and ‘The Story’ alongside her longtime bandmates Phil and Tom Hanseroth, the first surprise musical guest of the night was none other than Carlile’s wife, Catherine Carlile. The loved-up pair sang Carlile’s ‘I Belong to You,’ finishing the song with a kiss before their audience.
They then performed a cover of The Indigo Girls’ ‘Closer to Fine,’ which featured on the Barbie movie soundtrack. “How Catherine and I loved the Indigo Girls,” Carlile shared as she introduced the song, before sweetly telling her wife, “You look really pretty tonight.”
The singer-songwriter was then joined by golden-clad Lucius frontwomen Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, with whom she performed the trio’s song ‘You and Me on the Rock.’ The American indie-pop duo remained onstage as Carlile brought out Allison Russell, who recited a prayer for peace and performed her newly-released anthem, ‘Requiem’ with the backing support of Carlile and her onstage crew.
The multi-talented Blake Mills joined Carlile as the pair performed ‘Press My Luck,’ featuring an experimental Mills-style guitar solo. Carlile also performed a few iconic covers throughout the night, bringing on Wendy & Lisa to help her with Prince’s ‘Mountains.’
One of the biggest surprise guests arrived in the form of Annie Lennox, who brought even more energy to the already-packed stage. The Scottish Eurythmics icon joined Carlile and her friends to perform ‘No More “I Love You’s”’ by The Lover Speaks and the Eurythmics track ‘Love Is A Stranger.’
Carlile ended the night asking her roughly 20,000 person audience to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Mitchell, who turns 80 on November 7. Perched in a throne centre-stage, the famed singer-songwriter beamed as the audience sang back to her, topping off a golden night of collaborative musical performances.
