The ex-pat Dublin duo move on up. And other stories.
Having bubbled under for the last couple of years, Dublin/New York electronic duo The Glass are rocketing towards the big time with a hugely successful American and Canadian tour last month, which included a well-received set at SXSW (playing at Moby’s Vegan Barbeque) and continued acclaim for their recent album At Swim Two Birds. Now the band have scored further kudos with the video for their latest release, ‘Four Four Letter’, directed by underground German artist Michael Maier. A sneak preview can be found on www.myspace.com/theglass.
Another bubbling talent taking a step up is Orla Feeney, who has landed her biggest gig yet, headlining the legendary Lush night in Kelly’s of Portrush on March 26. “To play at Lush is a privilge, but to headline it is very special. DJs like Armin Van Buuren and Eddie Halliwell have cited it as one of their favourite places in the world to play and the clubbers make Lush so special, so I’m really looking forward to rocking it and I advise (Lush head-man) Col Hamilton to build a new roof!”
The UK bass sound of Pressure in Belfast is being taken back to its roots in hardcore for the club’s first birthday party on March 26. Altern8’s Mark Archer is guesting at the bash in Queens University Student Union Bar with his trademark history-of-rave sets peppered with classic guerilla chart hits from the band themselves. Meanwhile hardcore’s rowdy grandchild grime is also being represented in Belfast this month with new bass club night Ecker bringing over the UK’s Terror Danjah (from the seminal Hyperdub label) to LoveAndDeathInc on April 1. The Life Festival give us a taste of what to expect over the May Bank Holiday with an April 1 launch party in Dublin’s Twisted Pepper, with the venue’s four rooms being manned by the likes of Neutronyx, Liquid and Raggae Soundsystem. For more details go to www.life-festival.com. Also kicking off on April 1 is Mind Over Manor, a two-day bring-your-own-booze festival that’s being held in Laois’ Roundwood House. Tickets for the Phil Kieran-headlined bash are available from [email protected]
Missed Daft Punk’s legendary Marlay Park concert in 2006? All is not lost. Daft-As-Punk, a new tribute act, touch down at The Workman’s Club on April Fool’s Day. No, really!
Last issue He’s Electric reported on Airbound, a Dublin/London boat-and-afterparty on the Thames next month. Now the organisers are giving a budding DJ a chance to test their sea legs with a mix competition for a slot on the bill. Upload a mix to soundcloud.com, call it Airbound 23/04/11 Corsica Studios Mix and email the link to [email protected].
