Cage The Elephant have also released their single ‘Out Loud’ from their upcoming album.
On May 17th from Columbia Records, Cage The Elephant will release their sixth studio album Neon Pill.
From the forthcoming album they have released two singles, ‘Neon Pill’, the namesake of the album on January 19, and ‘Out Loud’ on February 29. The release of their new album will kickstart their 45-date North American summer tour which will start on June 20.
Hailing from Kentucky, this six piece band consisting of brothers Matthew Shultz on vocals and Brad Shultz on guitar, as well as Daniel Tichenor on bass, Jared Champion on drums, Nick Bockrath on lead guitar and Matthan Minster on guitar, keys and backing vocals, have made their band a household name through their creative tracks and expressive performance style.
“To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way,” observes Matthew. “Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice…With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves. We weren’t reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing.”
The group has earned dozens of Gold, Platinum and Multiplatinum certifications, as well has 10 number one records on Alternative Radio and five number one records on Triple A Radio. On top of that, their albums Tell Me I’m Pretty from 2015 and Social Cues from 2019 have been named Best Rock Album at the Grammys.
Their upcoming album Neon Pill was created in a time when all the band members were facing various hardships in their lives. Nine months into the pandemic, Matthew and Brad lost their father, the band faced back-to-back deaths of their friends and Matthew also experienced depression and a mental breakdown that resulted in his hospitalisation.

‘Out Loud’ has been declared the most emotional track on the album. “‘Out Loud’ is very connected to my father. My dad’s the reason we discovered music in the first place. When he died, ‘Out Loud’ just poured out of me. My efforts towards the song were deeply rooted in paying honour to him, and I knew it meant a lot to Brad too,” Matthew said.
He continued by saying that the track is “also in connection with the difficulties that I was dealing with at that time. It was almost a subconscious apology of sorts before I was fully capable of grasping the gravity of it all. Subconsciously working through it while channeling all of the adversity my family faced growing up coming full circle into my adult life in this one song.”
Cage The Elephant will start their North American tour in Salt Lake City on June 20. They will play in cities such as Vancouver, San Francisco, Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, New York and they will end in Ocean City on September 27. The band will be supported by Young The Giant and Bakar on most dates.
‘Neon Pill’ and ‘Out Loud’ are now streamable on all platforms and can be found here. The album Neon Pill is available for pre-order in all formats here. Tickets for their North American tour will be available to the general public on March 8 and can be found here.
