Former folk musician Brighid Fry excites with her new queer indie-pop EP.
Canadian artist Housewife has announced the release of her third EP Girl Of The Hour – out March 7.
The fifth single off the project, ‘Work Song,’ dropped today along with an accompanying music video. Audiences may recognise Housewife, also known as Brighid Fry, for her indie-pop sound and the release of her 2022 EP You'll Be Forgiven.
"‘Work Song' is about feeling unsatisfied with yourself and where you're going,” said Fry. “I have really high expectations of myself but also have really unhealthy habits and so oscillate between being a workaholic and being burnt out. I wanted to poke fun at myself, while still processing it as a valid issue in my life. This song is for anyone else out there with executive functioning issues who sometimes feel like a hot mess.”
Fry formerly worked with Pascale Padilla in folk duo Moscow Apartment. She earned the Best Young Songwriters award at the 2017 Toronto Independent Music Awards and Best Young Performer at the 2017 Canadian Folk Music Awards for her collaboration. Now focusing on her solo career, Fry draws inspiration from her identity and upbringing.
"My parents are bisexual; my grandma's a lesbian; I grew up going to Pride so I never had a teary coming out," said Fry. Recently, the singer also came out as non-binary. "It took longer to figure that bit out, but I've never struggled with my identity."

Fry’s obsession with music began as a toddler, when she became hooked on classical music. She asked her parents for a kid’s violin, and even a collection of busts of Bach and Beethoven. As she grew older, her family would bring her along to folk festivals, with her first non-classical performance taking place at a Greenpeace fundraiser.
Her second single 'Wasn't You' addresses the feeling of falling for someone against your own wishes.
"My problem with being bisexual isn't about being attracted to women, it's being attracted to men,” she explained. "[They] have been raised and socialised in a completely different way than me, and don't have to deal with sexism and misogyny in the same way I do."
‘I Lied,’ a MUNA-inspired track, expresses the reality of queer attraction among women.
"Sometimes your friends are hot and that can get more complicated when there are no hard lines on what you are,” Fry said. "That's how my queerness ends up coming out in my music."
‘Matilda,’ the sixth and final song off the EP, tells the story of Fry losing her bike.
"It's about the aspect of needing to move on and dealing with loss that was informed by this other big loss in my life," she said. "But I genuinely cried when I lost that bike."
