‘Bodak Yellow’, Cardi’s debut single topped the US Billboard charts for three consecutive weeks, making the rapper only the fifth female rapper to ever top the chart, and only the second to do it solo, after Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo Wap (That Thing)’ in 1998. Bodak Yellow won single of the year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop awards and was nominated for two Grammys.
‘Bartier Cardi’ and ‘MotorSport’ followed, further cementing Cardi’s status as an artist on the rise. A feature on Bruno Mars’ track ‘Finesse’ boosted Cardi’s recognisability and led to eager anticipation when she would announce her own album.
