The new single arrives just ahead of the band's self-titled debut EP, out June 7th.
Cork five-piece Cardinals have unveiled the opening track off their upcoming debut EP, a self-titled collection of bangers due out tomorrow, June 7th, via So Young Records. The newly released single, ‘Twist and Turn’, has already proved to be a crowd favourite from the band’s recent run on the live circuit.
“To me ‘Twist and Turn’ is a song about how writing has become a highly therapeutic practice for us all,” said lead singer Euan Manning. “It’s got some poppy melodies and a danceable backbeat, the lyrics though, they’re all about grief. I wanted to have a song where the tambourine is the main instrument.”
Perpetually pushing the boundaries of alternative music, the young band draws on the effervescent sounds of 80s indie music to craft a unique amalgamation of eclectic shoegaze and Irish trad folk. Beginning as a light-hearted dream among sixteen-year-olds, the band of Manning, Oskar Gudinovic, Aaron Hurley, Finn Manning and Darragh Manning has quickly become a reality, cemented on the Irish music scene with the imminent release of their six-track EP, recorded alongside Richie Kennedy.
“It’s a collection of songs that were written when we were living and playing in Cork City,” Manning said. “It’s pop music at its core, personal, youthful, and, if you can see past the chaos and noise it’s extremely warm. There’s a narrative if you’ve got the heart to look for it. It’s our first EP and we’re looking forward to it being out there for everyone to hear.”
The band will celebrate the launch of their new album with a headline appearance at The Kiln in Cork this Saturday, June 8th.
