We re not just another girl band, insist ATOMIC KITTEN. EAMON SWEENEY doesn t get a chance to disagree.
Most of the time this interview lark consists of long and boring conversations with obscure nobodies about what it s like to work with such and such a producer, what's your favourite Velvet Underground album and blah, blah, blah. Hence, when three sassy, feisty and hyper-energetic Atomic Kittens bound into the room, I am forced to wake up from my Sunday afternoon lethargy and talk pop shop.
Atomic Kitten are Natasha Hamilton (Ginger Kitten), Liz McClaron (Sporty Kitten) and Kerry Katona (Joker Kitten) who smashed straight into the UK top ten with their first single. They've been together eight months, and been signed for seven.
So Kittens, how's the form?
"SOUND AS A POUND, LA!" they roar as one.
Enjoying Dublin?
"Yeah it s wicked! We were in the PoD last night."
A good laugh?
"Yeah good night. We were in The Oxo beforehand."
What???
"THE Oxo. No sorry The Odeon.Ha ha ha ha ha ha! The Oxo! Here love! Give us a pint of gravy! Ha ha ha ha!"
Before I can even ask my next question, the girls have already answered ten. Natasha is waxing lyrical about Ireland.
"Yeah, I love it here," she enthuses. "My parents are from Ardragh in Kilkenny. You know that place that always wins the most picturesque town in Ireland.
Since I was really little I always wanted to play the Point. Ever since I watched the Eurovision", says Kerry. "I always wanted to sing for England."
If you had a choice would you rather sing for England or do Atomic Kitten?
"Oh Atomic Kitten definitely!" chorus the girls as one. "Sure we talk for England so that's close enough!" adds Liz, followed by another explosion of communal laughter.
The conversation rapidly flits between air turbulence, dance music, the Atomic Kitten TV show, singing in Bloodbrothers on Broadway and other such dreams. The girls intend to get an Atomic Kitten tour bus with wall to wall mirrors and a set of decks for Natasha to deejay on in the back.
They are also good friends with Spice Girl Mel C, whom they had the honour of interviewing. Somehow saying that I was talking to Death in Vegas over the weekend doesn't quite match that.
So finally, for the New Year, decade, century and millennium, what's the Atomic Kitten message?
"A dream never has to stay a dream. Do what you wanna, say what you wanna and be what you wanna be!"
I've no retort to that, but I'll raise my glass of Cherry Cola and Kit Kat to Kitten Power 2000!
Atomic Kitten release 'See Ya' on the 20th March 2000. The single includes interactive videos/song words and a singalong Kitty Karaoke version!
