Take one jazz six-string bass player, add a versatile multi-instrumentalist and a powerful lead singer, and you’ve got an interesting band. Dave Reid’s melodic bass lines accord surprisingly well with the traditional cattle-calling song ‘Brothen i’r Buarth’, which then segues directly into an original piece by Reid. Stacey Blythe displays a nimble touch on the piano on the sprightly jig ‘Ty Crwn’, while Lynne Denman has a smooth, husky voice that’s perfectly suited to the Breton song ‘Le Petit Cordonier’. She also contributes lovely new melodies to much older lyrics, including a 6th century nursery rhyme and 17th and 19th century Welsh poems. When it all comes together, with the bass and piano answering each other’s questions and Denman’s vocals soaring effortlessly overhead, the effect is downright magical.
