Chance the Rapper revealed the “back-and-forth” in a recent interview.
Chance the Rapper has revealed that Kanye West tried to scrap his verse on ‘Ultralight Beam’, taken from West’s 2016 album Life Of Pablo.
In a new interview with the Grammy’s to mark the fifth anniversary of Chance’s album Coloring Book, the rapper revealed West took issue with one of his lyrics - which referenced the Grammy’s.
“I met Kanye West, I’m never going to fail/He said, ‘Let’s do a good ass job with Chance 3 /I hear you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy,” was the line in question. “Kanye didn’t want me to say that [line] on that song. And I had to go back and forth with him about keeping my line on there,” said the Chicago rapper about Kanye’s reaction.
Chance, whose real name is Chancellor Johnathan Bennett, eventually won Kanye over and the song was released in 2016 with his feature intact. The 28-year old said that the lyric was his way of manifesting a Grammy nod.
“I rapped on Kanye’s shit right before it came out that I was working on these three Grammys, and I was like, ‘If I keep rapping like that, and just saying shit’s gonna happen, that’s just gonna happen.' And it started happening,” he said in the interview.

Chance’s mixtapes weren’t eligible for Grammy consideration until June 2016 when the Recording Academy allowed streaming-only albums. Coloring Book went on to win Best Rap Album at the 2017 Grammy’s.
The rapper also spoke about what it was like to work with the pop-culture icon: “Just being in a position to rap [with] the person who probably is the reason I became a rapper — to be able to produce and write and to be featured on the intro, the first real rap verse you hear on the album, was crazy to me,” he said.
“I was, at that time, speaking it into existence like, ‘Kanye gonna hit us up soon. You gonna be working with ‘Ye soon.’ And when that happened, I had to keep doing that. I had to keep being like, ‘I’m gonna just say what’s gonna happen',” he added.
Chance has been somewhat of a protegé for Kanye West over the last few years but a video recently emerged which featured Kanye screaming at the rapper. The footage is said to be taken from a new documentary filmed at Ye’s Wyoming compound.
The clip shows Kanye becoming agitated and eventually leads to him telling Chance to sit his “ass down and listen to the album or leave.” Kanye fans are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of his new album Donda which has experienced multiple delays.
