Details about the funeral of Charlie Bird will be held today to celebrate his life
A service commemorating the life of former RTÉ journalist and renowned charity advocate Charlie Bird, who peacefully passed away on Monday at the age of 74, is scheduled for today at Dublin’s Mansion House. The service will be held in the Round Room of the Mansion House at noon as friends, family, and admirers will gather to honour Bird's impactful life.
Bird received the devastating diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease in 2021, which he candidly described as a "nightmare." He embarked on a mission to spread awareness and funds for the illness. In particular, his "Climb With Charlie" initiative resulted in the symbolic climbing of the mountain Croagh Patrick in 2022.
This raised over €3 million for charities like the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House. Lillian McGovern of the IMNDA emphasized the invaluable impact of the funds raised by Bird, which provided support for individuals affected by the illness.

Bird's career at RTÉ spanned nearly four decades, beginning with his role as a researcher in current affairs in 1974. He later transitioned to the news department in 1980. Throughout his tenure, he covered a plethora of significant events, from the tragic Stardust incident to the complexities of the Troubles and the subsequent peace process in Northern Ireland.
His skills for journalism were most prominently revealed in 1998 when he, alongside George Lee, exposed corrupt practices at the National Irish Bank. Later, he served as Washington Correspondent before returning to Ireland to report on national affairs.
Charlie Bird's passing was met with an outpouring of heartfelt tributes, with President Michael D Higgins describing him as a "truly remarkable man" driven by an intense commitment to social justice. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Micheál Martin also expressed their admiration for Bird's journalistic talent and unwavering spirit throughout his career.
