Chas & Dave - That's What Happens
Rockney duo get a make-over
Everyone’s got a favourite Chas and Dave story. Personally, my most treasured tale relating to the tunesmiths is that they performed on Eminem’s break-through single ‘My Name Is’. Well, here’s an even bigger surprise: a skiffle record with serious chops. Yes, readers, the former ‘Snooker Loopy’ duo have returned to their roots for That’s What Happens and their first studio album in decades is one that many, including this writer, thought they would never make.
There are still traces of their past sins, such as the ‘theme from Minder’-like ‘Look At Me’ and the less than impressive instrumental ‘Rocking Gloworm’, which sees them having a mandatory tinkle on the “old Joanna”. Elsewhere, however, we get quite delicate (by their standards) rhythm and blues numbers like ‘Railroad Bill’ and ‘Midnight Special’, setting them up as London’s answer to Seasick Steve. As if to strengthen that impresssion, Jools Holland guests on ‘All By Myself’ and his presence, along with sweet and tender tunes like ‘Right String Baby’, help give the Chas & Dave brand some much needed rehabbing. More than just a curiosity...
Key Track: 'Railroad Bill'
