All hail the very welcome return of Limerick's finest with a cracking new album...
One man who can always be relied on to bring a dash of colour to your listening day is Limerick’s Crayonsmith. So we at HP Towers were delighted to hear his new opus Milk Teeth arrives via Out On A Limb Records on October 18.
Milk Teeth sees Ciarán joined by Richie O’Reilly (Guilty Optics) and Wayne Dunlea (ex-Waiting Room) for their first album as a trio. Crayonsmith’s previous outings Stay Loose (2006) and White Wonder (2008) were Ciaran solo efforts.
Over the years Crayonsmith has toured the UK and Ireland with Sparklehorse after a personal invite from the late Mark Linkous, criss-crossed the US with Islands, and shared the stage with Why?, Yeasayer, CFTPA, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Check hotpress.com for Irish live dates.
On another Limerick note, the very lovely Animal Beats launch new EP Cheap Carnival on October 16 and have just announced a string of dates across the country. The four-piece kick off on October 17 in Sweeney’s, Dublin before moving on to Roisin Dubh, Galway (18); Crane Lane, Cork (November 13); and Dolan’s Warehouse, Limerick (15). Watch out for new single ‘Wondering’ which lands two days prior to the EP release.
Turning to an aeronautical topic, Biggles Flys Again has scheduled a Whelan’s, Dublin date on October 24 following a very successful festival season. The outfit is the brainchild of Conor Deasy (no, not the Thrill! The Gandhi!) and they self-released their debut album Remember Saturday in March of this year to many plaudits.
They finish 2013 with live dates in London and Paris and have also begun work on albumnumber two.
Also basking in the glow of a triumphant festival season are Cronin (Johnny and Mick’s post-Aftermath guise!) who are gearing up for the launch of the In Loneliness Lives Love EP on October 18 on their own Transmission Records.
The guys got out their black books for this one and managed to tempt numerous friends including Waterboy Steve Wickham, BP Fallon, Shane MacGowan and former Frame Karl Odlum into the studio. It was mixed by Ger McDonnell of U2 renown and mastered in Abbey Road.
On October 19 The Sugar Club plays host to not one but two Led Zeppelin tribute shows. Following 2010’s John Bonham Tribute, 2011’s Led Zeppelin IV LIVE, and last year’s Houses Of The Holy LIVE, this year Whole Lotta Zepp are set to play Led Zeppelin II in full, with a nine-piece band and their trademark three drummers on three drum-kits. There’s an afternoon family-friendly show and a more raucous affair later that evening. Watch out for Brian Palm of The Mary Stokes Band blowing up a storm on harmonica!
On a MSB note, the group play a trio of shows in Counihan’s Pub as part of this year’s Cork Jazz Festival (October 25, 26 and 27). The band now boasts Lee Boylan of Fight Like Apes on drums. A must for jazz fans!
