Considering the Any Other City label was the first home to Villagers' Conor O’Brien any of their releases should be given keen attention!
It is with great excitement then that we await the arrival of New Amusement’s debut album My Captain on October 8.
2008 saw the release of cracking six-tracker ‘Any Port In A Storm’ and many excellent live performances followed, including support to British Sea Power.
Live dates have been booked in support (check hotpress.com for details) including a show in Whelan’s on Saturday 16 with special guests Hello Moon and Squarehead. Happy days indeed!
Also releasing a long-player are Carlow combo Cleere. Taster single ‘Sick Day (All A Joke)’ is out on October 1 followed by the album East/West on October 8.
The opus was mixed by Philip Magee (The Script, Aslan, Brian McFadden) and mastered in New York by the legendary Steve Fallone (The Strokes, James Brown).
The band have completed a mammoth 75-date support tour with magician Keith Barry (including 20 shows at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre)...
Top Dublin indie troupe Bipolar Empire will release new single ‘Tempomanic’ on October 15, followed by their as yet unnamed debut album in February. The video for the new track was directed by the legendary Kevin Godley (U2, Sting) and you can check it out here
The beat does indeed go on… Unbelievably September 25 will mark the 30th anniversary of the death of John Bonham. Not wanting the day to pass unrecognized, drummer and Bonzo devotee Simon Freeman has organised a unique tribute event in The Sugar Club to mark the occasion.
The show includes plenty of performances of classic Led Zepp tunes, a drum duet, a screening of the classic Moby Dick drum solo and the opportunity to win a Pearl Demon Drive Pedal.
Johnny Boyle (The Frames, Marianne Faithful, Picturehouse) and Binzer Brennan of Gemma Hayes, Mundy and Waterboys fame will both be performing at the event. All ages welcome. Doors open at 2pm and tickets are €10 at the venue.
Also on September 25 the Young Hearts Run Free Collective will be hosting a night of musical treats in the CO-OP, Newmarket, Blackpitts. The show will include performances from; Patrick Kelleher and His Cold Dead Hands, Hunter-Gatherer, Hulk, Groom, Rory Grubb, Hello Moon, NiamhMcCormackSings and Eamon Sweeney, Skinny Wolves, George Rogers, Peter Toomey and the YHRF Collective. All proceeds go to the Simon Community.
The following day the collective hosts a series of readings in the Unitarian Church on Stephens Green at 2pm featuring Adrian Crowley, Kevin Barry, Nuala Ní Chonchúir and music from Tommy Peoples.
News from the south next… Cork man Bill Coleman will release his new confection You Can’t Buy Back Your Life on October 15, it will be preceded by the single ‘I Want You To Know’. Check hotpress.com for tour details…
Fellow Peoples’ Republic residents Ugly Beautiful release debut single ‘Hundred To One’ on October 15 taken from the acclaimed album Paradise (2009). The troupe’s guitar-driven experimental fare has gained them quite the following. The have gigged extensively nationwide and also supported The Maccabees and Villagers as well as recent festival duties at Indiependence.
The new single will be available to download from iTunes, Amazon, Napster, eMusic, Rhapsody, Shocksound and DownloadMusic.ie
In Limerick news, the new Windings album It’s Never Night is due on October 8. A full Irish tour and a series of instore performances will coincide with the release and the outfit will be jetting across to play the CMJ Music marathon in New York on October 22.

Keeping things south-west, Kerry outfit Tenpastseven have released a new single ‘Bothar Bui’ with the delightful Katie Kim on vocals. The opus has been two years in the making but to reward your patience the artwork for the limited run is a wall-mountable slate done by Buttervant printers. The single can be downloaded for €3 at tenpastseven.bandcamp.com
