CMAT, tipped as one of our 'Hot for 2021 Irish Acts', has been nominated for Popjustice's Twenty Quid Music Prize 2021 for her single 'I Don't Really Care For You' – alongside the likes of Dua Lipa, Little Mix, Laura Mvula, Raye, Jessie Ware, Pale Waves and more.
The award – which has been "celebrating greatness in pop since 2003" – famously presents the winner with a twenty pound note.
The twelve songs will be judged by a panel of around 45 judges in "a tournament-style smackdown debacle." According to the Popjustice website, the songs "are judged on qualities including tune, production, lyrics, drama, deployment of metaphor, and Congability™."
The Twenty Quid Award has been described as a tongue-in-cheek alternative to the Mercury Prize – with both awards taking place on the same night (September 9). Little Mix have won the Twenty Quid Award three times, while Dua Lipa won the 2020 prize.
In response to her nomination, CMAT stated that "this is the highest accolade possible" for her – especially considering that she was on the judging panel last year.
my only appeal to the people who are on the judging panel for this year (at least half of us will follow each other probably) - don’t let me get knocked out in the first round like my beloved Watermelon Sugar did last year . My wounds are still fresh and also I need 20 quid
