Tickets for Cory Wong's Vicar Street date (€35) go on sale this Friday, 18th November at 10am.
Self-proclaimed “hype-man” Cory Wong is returning to Dublin on 17th October 2023 for a headline show at Vicar Street. Armed with his trusty Stratocaster, Wong’s show promises to pack a punch, with his past performances emanating panache, poise and power.
Rather than singing, 37-year-old Cory insists his voice can be found in his purely instrumental sound, and aims to uplift people using it, “To uplift audiences with instrumental music that has no singing or lyrics is a fun challenge. I’m trying to solve the riddle. If I can get one person to feel good this way, it’s a success.” His sound has been branded as the motivational get-out-of-bed sound, for treadmill running tracks, or commuting music.
Born in New York but raised and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Wong has found both solo and collaborative success. Early in his career he lent a hand to The Voice where he crossed paths with American funk group Vulfpeck, and became a frequent collaborator and member. The band’s most popular instrumental track, named ‘Cory Wong’ is a testament to the band’s partnership. Cory remains a cornerstone of Vulfpeck’s most notable gigs, from Red Rocks Amphitheatre to Madison Square Garden.
“I try to feature the guitar, but I don’t force myself into being the star of every song,” the Grammy-nominated producer, podcaster and musician says. “The instrument plays an appropriate role. It’s not all flash. I’m bringing rhythm to the forefront where it’s not so shreddy. I refer to it as ‘Covert chops. I’m doing things that are sneakily hard, but they lay in the cut. I allow the song to breathe and present myself as more of a composer rather than a guitar player.”

Following on from two sold-out shows at the Button Factory in April, Cory hopes October 2023’s gig will emanate the pure joy he hopes to make palpable through his playing. “The guiding light is to impart a feeling of joy. I want people to experience instrumental music in a different way. This is hype. It’s more than just guitar.”
