Credo
Solid Return From Electro Pioneers
It’s hard to believe that the Sheffield synth-poppers have been around for over thirty years but the fact that they’re still drawing crowds is testament not only to their enduring popularity but to their status as electronic pioneers. Only their second album in a decade Credo could have been released back in the ‘80s such is their adherence to their original sound.
Phil Oakey’s distinctive voice and the backing vocals have changed little over the years while the robotic rhythms of tracks such as ‘Night People’ and ‘Sky’ are almost as catchy as some of their early hits. Despite their otherworldly electronic backdrop there was always something quintessentially suburban and domestic about the Human League and this contrasts with the social consciousness-raising ‘Get Together’ (“Find the courage to make the difference/Hold your head up high”) and ‘Privilege’, which rails at financial wrong-doings. Nice to know that some things never change!
