Alice Glass, former lead singer of Crystal Castles, has penned an open letter detailing the abuses she endured from co-founder of the band Ethan Kath.
The 29 year old Canadian left Crystal Castles in October 2014. At the time, she explained her departure as being “for a multitude of reasons both professional and personal”.
In her letter, she says that “the momentum that’s been created recently by the many courageous women who have opened up about their own stories has inspired me to finally be more direct, at whatever cost”.
Glass begins by explaining how she and Kath first met, “The first time he took advantage of me was when I was around 15. He was 10 years older than me”. Over the following decade, “he began abusively and systematically targeting my insecurities and controlling my behavior: my eating habits, who I could talk to, where I could go, what I could say in public, what I was allowed to wear”.
She describes the physical abuse inflicted upon her, “He held me over a staircase and threatened to throw me down it. He picked me up over his shoulders and threw me onto concrete… He broke glass shower doors to frighten me, he locked me into rooms”.
Most disturbingly, she says “he forced me to have sex with him or, he said, I wouldn’t be allowed to be in the band anymore”.
Now, three years on from leaving the band and having released her own solo material, Glass says she is “still recovering”.
Kath has released a statement as well via his attorney, saying he is “outraged and hurt by the recent statements made by Alice about me and our prior relationship. Her story is pure fiction and I am consulting my lawyers as to my legal options”.
