Galway technosmith Datsko chats his Electric Picnic debut ahead of the festival
This is my first time playing Electric Picnic. It’s also my first time attending, so I’m hitting two birds with one stone.
I’ve been producing since I was fourteen and started releasing music in 2021. It’s going really well. This year, I’ve played to my biggest ever crowds – from 600 at Outset to 8,000 at Longitude. It was a very big step up, and I’m told going from Longitude to Electric Picnic is an even bigger one. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around that!
As a performer, people can expect a groove from me from start to finish. I play a very high BPM set – it takes a lot of energy out of you, but it’s going to be insane. ‘Miracles’, my latest song, is harder and heavier; I wanted to make something that contrasted a bit with my previous output.
Anything up my sleeve? I’m planning on getting a collab song with Fionn Curran out soon. Having two Galway producers attack Ireland with one song will be fun! It won’t be out in time for EP, but I’m hopeful there’ll be an extra bit of buzz around my name after the festival.
What will I do with my cans? I think the deposit return scheme is a serious way to make an extra bit of change! There’s bound to be a load of cans around around at any festival, so you may as well make a few bob out of it. I think it’s a savage way to get a free can after all your recycling. Seriously, recycling the cans and bottles is a really good initiative. It keeps the festival clean and is good for the environment.
The act I am most excited to see? Calvin Harris. By a long way!
