David Fitzgerald, former lead guitarist for The Telescopes, has died

Drawing influence from artists such as Suicide, The Velvet Underground and The 13th Floor Elevators; The Telescopes released a total of eleven albums including their 1999 debut, 'Taste'.

English psychedelic rock band The Telescopes have announced that former lead guitarist David Fitzgerald has passed away.

Fitzgerald was one of the founding members of the outfit, who formed in Burton-upon-Trent in 1986, alongside frontman Stephen Lawrie, guitarist/vocalist Jo Doran, bassist Robert Brookes and drummer Dominic Dillon.

Posting to their official Facebook page last night, the group paid tribute to Fitzgerald, dubbing him “the first noise guitarist with The Telescopes and a main protagonist of its cause from the very beginning”.

"This is David's band of recent years turning their attention to the B side of our first ever record together," they said, before thanking the late musician for “the unforgettable memories and the incredible music he left behind and to light his way on the journey ahead.”

The dream pop, space and noise rock band also shared a link to a Telescopes cover recorded by Fitzgerald’s most recent band Junkyard Liberty.

The Telescopes’ also shared some archive footage of Fitzgerald playing his guitar to their Twitter followers, writing:

“Rest in noise punk soul brother”.
