He sang ‘Barbara H.’ and shared a memory of Schlesinger, who died from complications of coronavirus on April 2, although the pair never met.
Adam Schlesinger, the singer-songwriter of Fountains of Wayne who wrote numerous iconic songs that appeared in films and TV shows, died yesterday of complications from COVID-19.
Many artists have paid tribute to the late songwriter, and today, Ben Gibbard took a moment of his Live From Home live stream to cover a Fountains of Wayne song.
Towards the end of the live stream, around the 41-minute mark, Gibbard reflected on the musician’s death, saying that it’s “further bringing this horrible reality home that it’s not just old and feeble people who may lose their lives from this, but people who are, for intents and purposes, healthy and middle aged.”
Gibbard talked about how he never met Schlesinger directly, but added, “I owe him a huge debt of gratitude because he was integral in picking ‘Me & Magdalena’ for the Monkees to record four years ago,” he said. “I always thought, as one always does in life, that you’ll have plenty of time to say ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’ or give somebody a compliment or what have you, but that day obviously did not come.”
