Top drawer indie-pop.
It warmed the cockles of many Irish fans’ hearts when Delorentos scooped the 2013 Choice Music Prize with third album Little Sparks. What made the tale even more affecting was that the band actually split in 2009, only to reunite and record their strongest work yet.
The momentum created by Little Sparks has led to a new, major label deal and the band have produced an exceedingly fine piece of work with a little help from friends Rob Kirwan and Alan Moulder. The songs on Night Becomes Light are absolutely gorgeous.
Lead single ‘Show Me the Love’ is a fine appetiser. And yet, there’s much better on offer. This is an album where every track could be a potential single – how many records can you say that about?
‘Valley Where the Rivers Run’ subtly blends acoustic and electric sensibilities on one of their most impassioned tunes to date. ‘I Will Not Go’ ploughs a similar furrow with added noise, ‘Fits (Too Drunk to Drive)’ adds piano to another top drawer melody. And ‘City Still Warm’ is their best slow-burner yet.
‘Dublin Love Song’ ranks as a personal favourite. The Delos have penned a captivating paean to their hometown. In a moment where production standards are over-played, and song-writing neglected, Delorentos get it gorgeously right. Irish album for 2014? It’s a top contender.
