Popular radio DJ Nikki Hayes has bravely revealed that she gave up alcohol last year because of its negative side effects of being mixed with medication to deal with a mental health condition.
Niki says that she stopped drinking after a mental breakdown in August 2015, which resulted in her being hospitalized for five weeks.
Nikki, who has opened up in the past about her battle with mental health problems, has now also revealed that she was diagnosed last year with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder.
"With medication I was taking, alcohol was a no-no. I could take it but it would put me on such a downer it wasn’t worth it. So since then I’ve never been tempted to drink anymore. If I do I will feel physically very sick," she told RSVP magazine.
However, Nikki appears not to be missing the booze. “‘I am definitely seeing how wild I was in my drinking days which means by not drinking, I’m saving some dignity this year and I think that’s pretty priceless,” she said.
“I was such a party girl for so long that now when I say I don’t drink the first reaction I get is a laugh out loud. No-one believes me. I find I’m hyper sensitive to how pathetic I acted when I did drink.”
Niiki also bravely went into details about her mental breakdown back in August 2015. "I went to the fridge to get milk for tea and couldn’t figure out how to open it. I started roaring crying, I was distraught and rang Frank to come home,” she recalled.
“The ambulance came then and I was there in the psychiatric ward for the five weeks.”
In the past, Nikki also opened up about two suicide attempts. But, thankfully, as her interview in RSVP shows, she appears to be in a much more positive frame of mind these days.
