With corporate cynicism at its harshest, it’s interesting that the same fundamentalists who flip their metaphorical shit every time The Black Keys license a tune to a jeans manufacturer haven’t bothered to complain about the blockbuster collaboration between Gorillaz, André 3000 and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, which reaches us care of the trainer peddlers at Converse. Perhaps it’s because the partnership is simply a more obvious fit (2D and company have been wearing Converse for years and Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett has even designed a mini collection for the brand), or perhaps it’s because the track itself is so earthshakingly banging. Murphy and Albarn are in typically flying form here, but Outkast’s André 3000 triumphantly steals the show, spitting an infinite amount of quotable one-liners. The 13-minute version is even better, boasting a full-on collective freak out as André bellows, ‘I’m the shit! I don’t even have to sing in key/Ohhh! It’s ALL ABOUT ME!’ Seriously potent stuff.
