Exploring the fragility of relationships and heartbreak, ‘Stupid Heart’, ’This Tide Will Turn’, ‘Just Talk To Me’ and ‘Another Lonely Day’ – the four new songs by Donegal’s Don’t Fear the Natives – live up to their titles. Formerly known as Palomino, the indie group was founded by singer Claire McDaid and guitarist/songwriter Denis Kelly.
“We always wanted to progress into a band again," notes Kelly. "Our songs need the dynamics that you get from rehearsing as a group and playing live. It was completely natural for us to move forward with an enhanced line-up, and we feel as if we’re building momentum all the time. It’s very exciting!”
After their first promising releases ‘Hot Pumps’, ‘James Bond’ and ‘Give It All To Me’, Stupid Heart will be their debut EP.
“We’ll still experiment a bit," says Kelly. "Being a six-piece allows us the freedom to try things from electronic to acoustic –, but at the moment we’re just happy to rock!”
Though The Beatles, The Stone Roses, Spiritualized and Teenage Fanclub are among The Natives' musical role models, we can't help but think of Joni Mitchell when listening to our Stupid Heart favourite, 'This Tide Will Turn'. In short, Don't Fear the Natives are definitely ones to watch.
