Following the release of the Fire At Full Moon EP last year, Echotal have returned with a brand new single 'Kadira'. Featuring music by Echotal's David Rooney and Torsten Kinsella of God Is An Astronaut – as well as contributions from cellist Jo Quail and GIAA's bassist Niels Kinsella – the track was inspired by the traditional Persian whirling dance practiced by renowned Iranian dancer Khatoon Fallah. It marks the beginning of a thrilling new chapter for the lauded Echotal project, and arrives alongside an accompanying music video – starring Khatoon.
"When we were working on the piece I reached out to Khatoon after seeing her work on YouTube, in the hope that she would collaborate on a video for the track," David reveals. "To my delight and eternal gratitude she agreed. In this troubled world of ours it is heartening that one can find such a kindred generous spirit in a distant land. Music links us all in powerful ways."
Reflecting on the origins of her own connection with dance, Khatoon recalls:
“One night near the shore of the sea I saw a girl dancing and felt my cheeks wet with tears…what was it that I saw? How was it that this ‘form’ resonated with my soul in such a way...”
Torsten, who also produced, recorded and mixed the track in Co. Wicklow, notes that 'Kadira' emerged from an effort to "broaden the palette of Echotal, and try to introduce some groove into the equation."

"The core of ‘Kadira' is a based around a hypnotic line that was written by David," he resumes. "I wanted to keep that going throughout and introduce different counter melodies based mildly on a Middle Eastern scale. Then fuse it together with a groove bass line that would build accompanied by an underlying drum pattern and Jo Quail on Cello adding some Improvisational swells and effects throughout.”
Khatoon Fallah concludes:
“In the rhythmic dance of ‘Kadira', echoes of Iran's twirling grace intertwine with the soulful melody crafted by Echotal . A weave of guitar lines, ghostly cellos and driving bass, 'Kadira' is a harmonious fusion of Eastern whirling and Western tunes.
"Let the music carry you through a dance of cultures, a vibrant journey where traditions meet in a poetic embrace. David Rooney's creation, a mesmerizing blend, invites you to watch the enchantment, where East and West unite in the universal language of music and dance."
