The star says he'd perform his walkout song à la Sinead O'Connor.
With Ed Sheeran's two Croke Park shows done and dusted, the next stadium event on a lot of people's minds will be Conor McGregor's title shot against Jose Aldo. It could become an even bigger deal (especially for non-UFC fans) if The Notorious MMA just picked up the phone and called the 'A Team' star.
Talking to Hot Press at his Croke Park press conference last week, Sheeran said that he has been watching McGregor's rise.
"I was shown that fight that he was just in where he gets up, smiles and knocks [Chad Mendes] out!" the pop star said. "I think it's fantastic that he's doing really well."
Asked if he would be up for being part of McGregor's entourage and performing his walkout song – as Sinead O'Connor did for his Mendes fight – he was open to the idea.
"To be honest, I probably would. Although I don't think he will [ask]. I don't know what I'd sing at an MMA fight!"
Well, Ed, Sinead did 'The Foggy Dew' and you're a big Planxty fan, so... We'd suggest keeping it Irish. Now we just have to alert Team McGregor and make this happen.
Sheeran also took the opportunity to big up Gorey Amateur Boxing Club – his late grandfather Bill was a keen boxer and the President of the club.
