"Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now," he wrote on Instagram today, explaining that 'Afterglow' is a Christmas present to his fans rather than a taster for a new album.
Ed Sheeran has unveiled his first new music in 18 months with new single, 'Afterglow'.
Writing to his Instagram followers this morning, Sheeran said:
"'Afterglow' is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too."
The hugely successful star last shared new music with 2019’s star-studded No.6 Collaborations Project album, which saw him team up with the likes of Stormzy, Justin Bieber, Camila Cabello, Cardi B and more.
The record was Ed’s fourth album to reach the top spot in Ireland.

After teasing the release of the song yesterday, Sheeran has now released a performance video for 'Afterglow'.
Sheeran's incredible catalogue includes the studio albums + (plus), x (multiply) and ÷ (divide) which spawned hit singles such as ‘The A-Team’ , ’Lego House’, ‘Sing', ‘Thinking Out Loud’, ‘Photograph’, ‘Shape Of You’, ‘Castle on The Hill’ and ‘Perfect’.
The 29-year-old has sold 150 million records worldwide but is in the midst of a two-year break.
