Editors made the Electric Arena dance to "miserable songs"
It's been the summer of extremes for Editors, one minute they're headlining a festival with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as their support act, the next they're playing in the afternoon in the Electric Arena. As they told Hot Press in the Chat Room earlier today, this is the last gig of the In Dream tour. After this, inspiration will flow and a new album might be heading our way. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
The tent was packed as the band casually strolled on stage, 'No Harm' guiding them to a crescendo as the audience were in a trance-like state, absorbing the music. The last day of a festival is always a bit of a challenge, trying to get through the day without actually collapsing from exhaustion. Something Editors frontman Tom Smith tried to remedy, "We'll try to make you happy with some miserable songs".
'Sugar' hit the crowd with a bang, the thumping bass line going right through you. They might claim to write miserable songs, but the beat in some of them got the crowd pulling out some of their best moves. 'Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool' gave the arena reasons enough to move their hips, while new song 'The Pulse' got the crowd banging their heads to the rhythm. Older hits like 'Racing Rats' and 'Munich' were mixed expertly with new songs such as 'Ocean Of Night' and 'Forgiveness.' They clearly know the art of writing set lists.
The grand finale started off with 'Papillon', the whole arena jumping around and clapping their hands, making the earth shake for a little while. The epic 'Marching Orders' closed the set, another one of those classics in-the-making.
The crowd was still buzzing with electricity when they walked away with happy smiles on their faces. We can only wonder what would happen if they climbed up onto the bigger stage.
