Edwyn Collins, Carwyn Ellis and Sebastian Lewsley 'The Possibilities Are Endless OST' - Album Review
Moving soundtrack to incredible documentary
This soundtrack accompanies a haunting documentary chronicling Collins’ brave, painful recovery from a double-stroke. Given the subject matter it’s no surprise that the record is overbearingly emotive: opener ‘Leviathan Instrumental’ churns and crashes, like a terrible storm about to make landfall; elsewhere the tone is bleak and understated: ‘Quiet Like Silver Piano Refrain’ feels like a creeping outtake from Philip Glass, while ‘Closing Time At The Punk Rock Hotel’ is a bittersweet folk instrumental that threatens constantly to collapse under the weight of its ennui, yet somehow never does. For fans of Collins’ solo work and his music with Orange Juice, the highlight, surely, is a re-recording of ‘Don’t Shilly Shally’, a Smith-esque romp that finds light amid the oppressive dark.
OUT NOW.
