Electric Picnic Live Review - Wild Beasts
They operate best under cover of darkness, but still put in a strong show as the sunshine appears...
Ideally, you want the Kendal quartet beneath the night sky, or at least a roof. Their serpentine songs work best when the sun goes down, but they have no such luxury with an afternoon appearance on the Main Stage.
The sunshine (yes that's right!) can't dampen their dark, intoxicating mood however, as they roll out a masterful set culled from half a decade of being one of the most uniquely talented bands around.
It's been said a billion times, but the interplay between co-frontmen Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming remains mesmeric, while the whole performance is powered by the kind of tribal drums that suggest the Beastian empire is built on an Adam Ant hill.
'Bed Of Nails' is a macabre treat, the brace of 'The Devil's Crayon' and 'The Fun Powder Plot' is a slinky joy and 'We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues' steals the show.
Meanwhile, newie 'Wanderlust' grows in stature with every outing.
There is a little lost when you let light in upon the magic. But it's still magic.
