Conor Dockery of The Scratch looks ahead to the big weekend in Stradbally...
"The festival season is just a mad time. It’s chaotic but fun and we definitely welcome that. The crowds in Europe are a lot more civilised, they’re amazing, but everyone’s so well behaved and you start to miss the chaos a little bit. Then you get back to Ireland and you’re like, ‘Ah okay, this is the festival I know.’ We tend to go a lot more rowdy – it’s not really the time for bringing people on a journey, so we lean into the more up-tempo, fun stuff.
"We’ve done a few gigs at the Picnic now. The year before last, we did Rankin’s Wood, 3 Stage and the Salty Dog. The year before that, we did a smaller tent, so we’ve been building our way up and now we’re headlining Saturday night in Rankin’s Wood.
"I’ve been going to EP as a punter since 2012 or 2013. Kendrick Lamar is an act that stands out – Jamie XX and Overmono’s sets were unreal last year too. Some of my favourite bands were just added to this year’s line-up and I’m definitely buzzing to see them.
"Irish music is really good at the moment, that’s undeniable. Whether it’s Kneecap, Lankum or CMAT, I think there’s at least one act that, in my opinion, is the best in the world in their respective genres. The population has really rallied behind Irish acts for the first time in a long time. There’s a trad revival which hasn’t happened since the ‘60s and ‘70s, so there’s a fresh pride.
"People were starved of things they could identify with as an Irish person, and this generation of artists have come along to create incredible art, but also something that people can relate to."
The Scratch play Electric Picnic on Saturday, August 17.
