The legendary playwright passed away following a short illness.
Equus and Amadeus playwright Peter Shaffer has passed away, age 90, following a short illness.
The celebrated playwright passed away at Marymount Hospice Co.Cork surrounded by family at 5:30am on June 6.
His agent, Rupert Lord, said: “He was simply at the end of his life but delighted to have been able to celebrate his 90th birthday with friends and then, I think, decided it was time.”
Sir Peter Sheffer wrote over 18 plays including the academy award winning Amadeus which was adapted to the big screen in 1984. He also wrote Equus
Other famous works included The Royal Hunt Of The Sun, Black Comedy and Five Finger Exercise.
Shaffer is survived by his brother Brian, nephews Milo and Mark and nieces Cressida and Claudia. His agent said his close family and friends wanted to thank the staff who “cared for him so well” at Bon Secours hospital and Marymount hospice.
Amadeus is due to be shown once again on the National stage in October.
