Russian-Israeli singer Eden Golan's song is permitted into Eurovision with the change of its name
The Eurovision Song Contest has been ablaze with controversy surrounding Israel's entry, initially facing scrutiny over concerns of carrying a political message. Originally titled 'October Rain,' the song has undergone a rebranding, emerging as 'Hurricane.'
The composition, featuring a blend of English and Hebrew lyrics, sparked debates as some suggested that it referenced the victims of the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7. Despite these concerns, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has officially confirmed the eligibility of Israel's submission for the upcoming competition.
This decision followed a meticulous review by the Contest's Reference Group, ensuring adherence to Eurovision's committed rules against political statements. The song itself is performed by the Russian-Israeli singer Eden Golan, who earned her place to represent the country through a TV talent show.
During the show's finale, Golan won with a rendition of Aerosmith's 'Don't Want to Miss a Thing,', dedicated to the Israeli hostages held in Gaza, who were symbolised by empty chairs on stage.
Israel's public broadcaster, Kan, stood firm on retaining the original entry, even threatening withdrawal from the competition if the song wasn't allowed. However, the rewritten song plans to be released soon.

As Eurovision 2024 gets closer, set to take place in the city of Malmo, Sweden, tensions have brewed over Israel involvement in the competition with Ireland's entrant Bambie Thug saying: "Russia was excluded. it should be the same rules for everyone".
