Overdue debut worth the wait...
Good things come to those who wait. Evora – named after the park on the sleepy Howth peninsula where they all grew up within 50 yards of each other – have been waiting a long time. Now all in and around the 30-year mark, Evora allowed life to take its course. Band members moved to Switzerland, others got careers, but they still continued to jam and write together in some shape or form. When all five found themselves back living in Dublin, they put the heads down and got to work on their debut.
The songs on Hurry Up Before I Die reflect a level of maturity that comes with just living life. The vision is clear, the compositions are warm and considered, the lyrics are melancholic but never mopey (‘Meet Me By The Water’), and they know exactly when to throw in a soaring guitar riff or two (‘Any Other Way’).
They’ve also been pretty shrewd in choosing who they work with. Irish singer-songwriter Shannon’s delicate tones prove the perfect foil for Alan Rickard’s balmy vocals on heartwarming duet ‘Tell Me Your Name’, while the masterful string skills of Vyvienne Long appear on a handful of tracks.
Evora will rightly be happy with their lot, but there’s definitely more to come from the Evora Park Massive!
