"We’re seven songs in and knocking it out of the park!” Danny O'Donoghue says of the back to pop basics affair...
They were supposed to be taking a break from the studio this year, but Hot Press can reveal that The Script are speed recording a new album in the run up to Christmas in London.
Lead singer Danny O’Donoghue told us the good news last week as he joined us via-Skype for the Hot Press Christmas Round Table Summit.
“We did a writing session with the Wild Youth guys during the summer and were totally energised by how great a young band they are,” Danny enthused. “After we’d done the session with them, I said to Mark, ‘What are you doing tonight?’ He was like, ‘Not much’, so we went into the studio and, boom, wrote a song. I walked out of there going, ‘Fuck’, we’ve got the first track for the new record.' Mark and Glen felt the same. We booked the studio between now and December 23rd. We go kickboxing in the morning, head to the studio and do a bit of sparring and then spar lyrically with each other.”
With a week to go before Danny flies back to Dublin for his traditional Christmas Day visit to Temple Lane Children’s Hospital, everything is going swimmingly in the studio.
“Man, we’re seven songs in and knocking it out of the park!” Danny resumed. 'We’ve gone back to, ‘Here’s four instruments; how fucking good a song can we write with them?’ Gone are the days of massive production and bells and whistles. We’re looking outward, we’re looking inward, so it’s going to be a very emotional record and one that I really think will stand up there with the best of the Script albums. We’re like a rejuvenated new band coming back out now, so I’m really excited.”
We also get to hear Danny's HP Summit thoughts on U2, Making A Murderer, Curb Your Enthusiasm, buying €25,000 rounds in Belgium and, er, spreading penises...
