Punk-pop artist Tara Carroll, aka Fishwyfe, discusses her electrifying new single 'Ricky'.
What inspired your new single, ‘Ricky’?
It was inspired by a period in my life where I was struggling to break free from destructive behaviour. There were times I felt like I might have been opening a can of worms just for the fun of it, or digging a hole I couldn’t get out of. ‘Ricky’ is essentially about that experience.
Why did you take on the name Fishwyfe?
When my artist name was Host, I broke my hard drive. I thought I had it backed up and unfortunately I didn’t. When I eventually came back to music again, I wanted a fresh start, and the name Fishwyfe came from a random conversation.
I was at my partner’s house and her dad was talking about someone – he called her a fish wife. It’s essentially an argumentative, strong female person. I’m kind of shy and tend to be quiet, so I liked the idea of taking on that persona.
What was it like moving from acoustic guitar to punk music?

I love making acoustic music and I still do it. But when I’m producing music, I prefer it to be bigger and bolder. When I let my imagination run, it tends to come out as this bigger sound. I could go into the studio and start with a nice acoustic track, and then by the end, you could have something like ‘Ricky’. I’ve gone away from it lately, but I’d love to release an acoustic EP down the line.
What are your plans for the coming months?
New music is 120 percent happening. I’m writing more, so there’s going to be a bunch of stuff throughout the year. I want to do live shows too. I don’t have anything solid planned at the moment, but hopefully the opportunity comes along.
