The Castlebar-born musician called for change following last month's general election.
In his interview for the Hot Press annual 2025, Fontaines D.C.'s Conor Deegan III, aka Deego, shared his thoughts on the recently concluded general election.
The bassist for the Dublin-formed 5-piece said that he hopes for a shift in Ireland's political leadership, labelling the Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael coalition "a complete joke."
"It seems still unclear who’s going to be in power from the election results, but to be honest, I would really like to see a change of things," he told Will Russell. "As long as it was someone in power who wasn’t the Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael coalition, which I think is a complete joke.
“In some way, it’s a good thing – these historic enemies completely revealing how little they have that makes them different, and they’re just basically the same. Personally, I would like to see Sinn Féin give it a crack. But also, I think there are other parties that would be good as well, such as the Social Democrats."
The general election took place at the end of last month, and saw both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael earn 48 and 38 seats respectively, with main opposition party Sinn Féin winning 39 seats.

Elsewhere, Deego took aim at what he considers to be ongoing corruption within the Irish government, highlighting the viral €336k bike shed that was installed in Leinster House earlier this year.
“I just want to see some change for Ireland politically," he said. "Because there’s a lot of corruption and money being wasted, when Ireland makes a lot of money on taxes and then somehow it disappears on bike shelters.”
Recipients of Hot Press' Album Of The Year for their stellar fourth studio LP Romance, Fontaines D.C. enjoyed an incredibly successful 2024. Also in his interview, Deego discusses the project's diverse breadth of influences, its unique recording process and more.
