Rough Trade are celebrating their favourite albums of the year with the release of exclusive vinyl editions.
Rough Trade have compiled their annual list of the top 10 albums of the year. While 2018's top spot went to Shame's Songs of Praise, this year Dublin's own Fontaines D.C. have taken the No.1 position, with their acclaimed release Dogrel.
"We’d heard murmurs, we’d hung onto every single that came before it, but the arrival of Dogrel sparked something special, not least igniting the hearts of several die-hard fans at Rough Trade," the iconic record store revealed. "An urgent, insistent, powerful and prominent album. A poetic brawl, a slick-witted masterpiece. A self-assured, perfectly structured set of songs from five guys who know exactly how to pull you close and when to let you loose.
"It had to be Fontaines. A band that feel like they’ve been around forever already. Absolutely unmissable."
The honour is just one of many highlights in what's been a landmark year for the Irish band. Following the release of Dogrel in April, Fontaines D.C. charted at No.4 in the UK albums chart, performed on The Jimmy Fallon Show, and were nominated for the Mercury Prize.
In his review of Dogrel, Hot Press's John Walshe described Fontaines D.C.'s sound as "some of the most visceral guitar music this country has produced in a generation" – and predicted that the band are "gonna be fuckin' massive."
