News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer
Happy Birthday to the hard workin’ folk at Out On A Limb who just celebrated five years of bringing various domestic gems to the attention of music lovers nationwide. Lots of news from the stable too – do they ever take a break?
‘Anxious’, the latest radio single to be taken from Crayonsmith’s critically acclaimed second album White Wonder has been gracing the airwaves and is available for download in all the usual spots.
Catch them live at an-all ages show in The City Arts Centre, Dublin on August 14 before they skip over to the ZXZW Festival in Tilburg, Holland in September and Popkomm in Berlin in October.
Hooray For Humans’ spectacular debut long-player Safekeeping will be available in the UK from September 15 on the Smalltown America label. They play this year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival before heading over to Blighty for a slew of live dates.
Labelmates Rest are gearing up for some domestic live duties... they play Galway’s Roisin Dubh on August 14 and feature alongside Thrill Jockey’s Trans Am as part of a Ping Pong Guinness Jazz Weekend hoedown in Cork’s Cyprus Avenue on October 25.
Windings have been added this year’s Electric Picnic bill on Saturday August 30 on the Body & Soul stage, with a warm-up show in Dolan’s, Limerick on Wednesday 27.
Incidentally the 5th birthday party will be held belatedly in Upstairs @ Dolan’s on Friday November 21 and will feature some fine tunes from all of the above acts!
Wicklow rockers Glyder have just released their new Weather The Storm EP, which is available from itunes, emusic and glydermusic.com. The CD includes a cover of The Stunning classic ‘Brewing Up A Storm’, which you can also get an earful of at myspace.com/glyder
The band have toured with Thin Lizzy, Thunder, Hawkwind, Wishbone Ash and last year played Italy’s The Gods Of Metal Festival opening for Motley Crue and Velvet Revolver. But most impressive is the praise from Philomena Lynott who says: “Watching them I get a buzz the same as I did watching my Philip.” You can’t do better than that!
Mayo’s Marz Roche celebrates the release of his debut ‘What You Don’t Know’ single with an August 28 headliner in Whelan’s. The track is taken from his Tricks Of The Mind album, which follows later in the year. Marz is currently attracting a lot of UK interest having appeared as a ‘Playlist Artist’ in record industry bible Music Week, and will doubtless benefit from being part of the same Religion Music stable as MTV darling Lesley Roy (for more see Music News). Find out what all the fuss is about at myspace.com/marzroche.
Talking of Music Week, James McMorrow had some exceedingly nice things said about him by their A&R Editor Stuart Clarke (no relation) after a recent club gig in London. The Faction Records man also got to play the UK’s Global Gathering festival last week with his new bezzie mate Mark Ronson who was most impressed with McMorrow’s earlier guest appearances with him in Belfast and Dublin.
After several false starts, Director are about to start work on their sophomore album with Brad Wood who has previously produced the likes of Placebo, Liz Phair and The Bangles. You can hear some of the tunes they’ve got lined up for it on October 24 when the chaps play Cyprus Avenue, Cork.
Dublin’s Christine Deady plays her first Dublin headliner on August 15 in Crawdaddy. Already this year she’s been shotlisted for Vodafone’s Bright New Sounds and received a ‘Best Female’ nod from BalconyTV. Joining her on stage will be Dave Keegan on drums, Marc Aubele (The Walls/Dave Geraghty/Pig) on keyboards and electric guitar, Mick Morris on bass andSophie Coyle and Michelle Collins on backing vocals. CDs will be available on the night.
Gothic minstrel Larry Beau also pays a visit to Crawdaddy on August 23 to plug ‘Misery Hill’, the first single to be lifted from his second album Dreams Of Eden, which is due in the autumn.
