QUALITY DREAM POP FROM US INDIE MAVERICK
Virginia dream-pop merchant Jack Tatum, aka Wild Nothing, has caused quite a stir in US underground circles. Gemini conclusively proves that he is worthy of the attention.
You can hear echoes of Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine (is there an American underground band these days who aren't influenced by Kevin Shields and co?) in Tatum's wonderfully atmospheric, lo-fi dream-pop compositions. As well as getting the sonic textures spot on, Tatum's songs are also impressively melodic – the likes of 'Live In Dreams' (a title which neatly summarises the Wild Nothing manifesto) and 'Summer Holidays' are naggingly catchy tunes that you want to listen to again and again. In this respect, Wild Nothing is reminiscent of Altas Sound, the superb psych-pop project of Deerhunter's Bradford Cox.
Elsewhere, tracks such as 'Chinatown' and 'Our Composition Book' find Tatum exploring the kind of gloriously ragged indie-pop that made Pavement cult favourites back in the day. In the near future, expect to encounter much ado about Wild Nothing.
