Good news blues fans. One of Ireland’s foremost young exponents of music for weeping to are back.
Since 2007’s self-titled debut EP Limerick blues rockers Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters have enraptured folk at home and abroad. 2009’s ‘Congress Of Oddities’ raised the bar and now we can look forward to a full long-player in the form of The Devil In Music, due next month. Current single, the rather excellent ‘Thread The Needle’, provides a juicy taster of what to expect. Bravo gents!
The combo are currently on the road so you can get a live preview in the Roisin Dubh, Galway (February 10) and Baker Place. Limerick (12)……
On another live note, Waterford’s The Casanova Wave, aka Brian McCartan, is peddling his unique brand of ambient electro-pop around the highways and byways. If you missed his stellar show in the Grand Social you can catch him in Sal’s, Waterford on February 18 and The Workman’s Club on March 19. Watching him switch elegantly from laptop to synth to acoustic guitar, electric guitar and drums is very impressive!
Kildare’s Planet Parade have kick-started an Irish tour. (Check hotpress.com for details.) Expect lots of delightful nuggets from their wonderful Zulu Sound and Ghosts To People EPs. Having supported Passion Pit, Ellie Goudling, Hockey, Wild Beasts, Bell X1 and Delorentos over the last 18 months as well as packing out venues for solo shows, this is a live act not to be missed! ……
Some news from The Pale next...Dublin’s Hassle Merchants played a storming set in Twisted Pepper recently for the launch of their very fine Immaculate Consumption EP on their own Merchantsville Records.

Fellow Dub Brian Canavan and his new outfit The Difference Engine will make their debut single ‘Elephant Island’ available for download on February 24 at differenceengine.bandcamp.com. Garage rockers Cheap Freaks have released a brand new EP Teenage Brains on Psycho Sound Records. It’s a potent cocktail of fuzzed-out garage punk and heavy psych-rock richly deserving of a place on your iPod. Fronted by former Things bassist Robbie Brady and ex-DC Pakt guitarist Al Dodd the band received glowing reviews for 2010’s debut ‘Play Four Songs’. Expect a full album in May…..
Roscommon’s Town Criers have released their debut EP Wake Up with help from Dave Hingerty (ex-Frames) and Ken McHugh (Autamata). Together since 2006 the band have already warmed up crowds for The Flaws, Fred and Dirty Epics……
Donegal outfit Justin and the Visitors embark on their first Irish tour this month which includes 12 dates from February 25 to March 19, and Dublin fans can catch them in Shebeen Chic on March 16. In addition to original material expect the bands’ own take on classics such as ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ and ‘Brick In The Wall’. After the jaunt they’ll return home to start work on their debut longplayer…..
Since 2008’s A Boat Called Lottery EP Stephen Young has cultivated a loyal following and garnered much acclaim. Recently he joined forces with producers Gavin Glass, Tommy O’Sullivan and engineer Stephen O’Brien to complete his debut album Wilderness Machine, due March 25. The first single to be released from the opus is ‘Coke & Rum’. Arriving Feb 25 it was mastered by Aidan Foley. Stephen and his band, The Union, hit the road for a slew of dates on Feb 18.
