HAIM releases new single, ‘Summer Girl’ dedicated to Danielle’s partner when he was diagnosed with cancer

The song takes a jazzier route, as expected from hints and demos the band has dropped over the past month. Hot Press previously reported that their new sound would be, “heavily influenced by Jazz, along with a groovy saxophone.”

California sister act HAIM has finally released their much-anticipated single ‘Summer Girl’ after teasing new music for months and performing it live at an intimate show in LA. They kicked off the summer with a live chat over the new music video where Alana and Este chatted with fans during the official premiere on Youtube.

‘Summer Girl’ features. a groovy saxophone melody and chill summer lyrics. "The fears inside your heart as deep as gashes / You walk beside me, not behind me / Feel my unconditional love", sings Danielle Haim as she and her sisters strut down the street, peeling off layers in preparation for summer. Henry Solomon pines behind the girls as he plays the saxophone melody.

Earlier this week, Danielle took to social media to explain how personal the song really was for her. The song, she revealed, was in fact written around the same time her partner Ariel was diagnosed with cancer.

“We were touring on and off at this time and every time we were on the phone with each other or when I would come home in between shows, I wanted to be this light that shined on him when he was feeling very dark. I wanted to be his hope when he was feeling hopeless,” she wrote on the band’s Twitter account.

She went on to explain the technical side of how the song came to be. It started as a garage band demo on her phone that she remembered a couple of months ago. From “a doot doot doot little melody” with a bass line and drums, the demo evolved into a full single with the help of songwriter, producer, and composer Rostam Batmanglij.

fast forward to a couple months ago -I remembered this demo and pulled it up from my phone. I brought it to my friend rostam to see if he wanted to work on it. he wrote the sax part within the first couple minutes of working on it and it all clicked.
