There have been some exciting developments in the domestic dance scene of late, with a number of excellent new labels launching. Will Kinsella dusts down his vinyl player and gets in on the rhythmic action.
Dublin-based techno imprint RLSD Records – run by Philip Galvin Jnr and Doug Cooney – have announced two follow up EPs to their 2016 debut, Binaural Perception. RLSD 002, which hits stores this summer, features three original tracks from Jon Hussey, Fran Hartnett and Rory St. John, and a remix by Japanese artist Takaaki Itoh from WOLS. Following on from that, RLSD 003, Y-Series – a split EP with tracks by Philip Galvin Jnr & The Parallel – is coming out later in the year.
Elsewhere, Hybrasil launched his own label on April 10 with Hybrasil 001, a digital two-tracker featuring Anu and Wolf. Both have featured heavily in Hybrasil’s live sets at Space Ibiza, the Bord Gais Theatre and the Sven Vath Tour at Powerscourt.
Another new imprint to look out for is vinyl label Orange Tree Edits, which is the brainchild of DiVISION resident James Rogers. The debut release, Orange Tree Edits 001, was released on February 17 and sold that day, while the repress sold out within three weeks. It features two edits by Jimmy Rouge and has been spun in clubs by the likes of Motor City Drum Ensemble, Hunee & Dimitri from Paris.
The follow-up, Orange Tree Edits 002, features edits by Cove and R.Kitt and is available now while stocks last! It’s sure to be a hit with vinyl DJs around the globe, as the label continues to carve out a niche for itself with its unique style of afro-electro.
A further label collective to watch is de/konstruk/cionez, a community of audio-visual artists based in Dublin. An underground crew who focus on analogue gear, they’ve put on a number of events over the last couple years, with an emphasis on emerging underground artists.
Previous releases include the Soundscapes Of Dublin compilation, dBT’s ‘break.it’, and Broken Symbiosis’ Night Drive.Z, inspired by ’90s NYC hip-hop. Forthcoming releases include efforts from Argento and Nebraska, Apes Living Like Ants and Tiger.Tiger. Some past releases will be available in 2017 as vinyl and cassette editions – keep an eye on dekonstrukcionez.com.
Elsewhere, Matt Finnegan released his Shadow Boxing EP on Gasp Recordings in January, with cassette copies selling out by the end of the month. Premiered on Four Four magazine, the EP is available from gaspatletics.bandcamp.com/album/shadow-boxing.
Also worth checking out is Bolger, who released Chasing A Living on Eat It Records on April 7. Bolger is the founder of BPM Junction, an online platform that connects producers for collaborations and knowledge exchange, and also provides access to industry opportunities. Bolger has run techno parties in Waterford booking the likes of DAVE the
Drummer, Full Funktion, Diarmaid O Meara, Luke Creed and Myler.
Similarly exciting are Dublin techno duo Deviate, who last month released the Nightlink EP on Egothermia Records. Support for the release has come from Marco Carola, Umek, Sam Paganini, Luciano and Maceo Plex. We also recommend keeping an eye on Dublin drum and bass label Absys Records, who earlier this month released an album by Invadhertz titled Night Tales. For more info see absysrec.com.
Also making waves is Darragh Casey, who has two cracking EPs out at the moment: Zero on Souled Black and Heavy Weapons on Moira Audio Recordings.
Finally, best of luck to all heading down to BD Festival on Good Friday. Well on the way to selling out at the time of writing, BD has become a staple of the summer calendar. In the next edition, I’ll be taking a close look at this year’s other dance-oriented festivals.
